Tabletop RPG Adventure - Let the Games Begin!

In the Thelassa world compendium, we made use of the trope “Water is Air” seen in cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants and BoJack Horseman. Life underwater wouldn’t differ from life on land, despite features of some characters that mean this realistically wouldn’t be possible (TV Tropes, n.d.). I’m going to continue with this trope in assessment two for the same rea￾sons as the first assessment: I do not want players to have to worry about the physics of an underwater envi￾ronment, but rather focus on enjoying the adventure.

The adventure will revolve around an annual event in Thelassa, the undersea games. This event is akin to and inspired by the Olympics. The game’s in-world purpose is to promote unification between nations. This is a large reason for choosing this event as the setting of my adventure; players will have a reason to work together. A large sporting event will also create opportunities for players to interact with a variety of NPCs.

For this adventure, I am drawing on the RPG trope ‘score one for the home team’ (Ross, 1999). This trope will also give players a reason to work together. It also works very well with my key plot inspiration: a film called Miss Congeniality. This inspiration influences the reason the players are participating in the first place. Because this adventure is primarily about a sporting event, it is also drawing on tropes such as ‘Olympics’ (TV Tropes, n.d.) and ‘deep cover agent’ (TV Tropes, n.d.).

The sporting events players will participate in will be inspired by the real life Olympic events and other team sports. These events will likely be familiar to players, and mean players may be more confident on how to proceed and will be able to focus on the adventure at hand.
